The comparably small flowers with a large utricle and curiously shaped 'belly' appear everywhere in the axillary buds even before leaves emerge and the plant starts growth.

Although closely related to the massive vines A. macrophylla and A. tomentosa from the US and Canada this species is far less vigorous.
