Aristolochia paulistana belongs to the most stunning and colourful species in the affinity of the trilobata complex. Still, the association with this group is quite uncertain as the plant exhibits similar flower structure but completely different type of growth.

Moreover, the leaves are thick and leathery in contrast to A. trilobata that displays deeply 3-lobed foliage.
